RUNNING: PROBLEMS OF TEACHING AND TRAINING
by Iliya Lubishev
Translated by Dr. Svetlana Romanov
A round table discussion "Running: Problems of Teaching and Training" devoted to the 80th anniversary of the scientific research magazine Theory and Practice of Physical Culture took place in The Russian State University of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism.
A very interesting report by Nicholas Romanov, a coach from the USA, the author of the Pose (from the word "pose") Method, the unique system of running, allowing the athletes to achieve especially high results and significantly decrease injuries in running, attracted the most attention from the audience. This method was developed by N. Romanov back in 1976 when he was working as a teacher of Track and Field and Biomechanics at the Chuvash State Pedagogical Institute.
For more than 11 years since his family moved to the USA N. Romanov has been successfully applying this method in Europe, America, Canada, Mexico, Australia and South Africa. He is one of the coaches of the British Olympic Triathlon Team and his student, the Brit Andrew Johns, was one of the first in the world triathlon who ran 10K faster than 30 minutes, and that was after 1.5K of swimming and 40K of biking.
"The essence of the Pose Method is simple" explains Romanov," It's to fall, but not to fall down." "Usually people run raising their knees in front of them, landing on the heels, and even leaning backwards, that is they interfere with their own running without even realizing it. But all you need is to fall under the influence of gravity and apply your efforts only for changing supports (poses)".
The pose defined by N. Romanov allows for the maximal use of the gravity force and the optimal work of muscles for the most efficient body transfer. N. Romanov showed in his report how the Pose Method of Running helps people to utilize more fully their physiological potential and adjust themselves to the action of the outer forces of nature, but not struggle with them.

"Many runners are accustomed to the idea that they need to pay with pain for their love of running. That's why 80% of them are running through "I can't" feeling. But this is absurd! Everything can be done naturally and simply". N. Romanov's views on running technique as a rule shock the specialists. Still his research conducted in South Africa together with Tim Noakes convincingly proved that the Pose Method allows runners to decrease 50% the load on the knee joint. It means that the possibility of being injured significantly decreases in Pose running.
The audience liked these convincing conclusions and started to inquire about the possibility of applying the Pose Method to other sport events. The author told them about his methods developed for swimming and biking. The students from the Department of Sport Cycling invited N. Romanov to their training gym where he showed and explained to them the essence of application of his method to pedaling.
One can only add here that in 2002 The Pose Method of Running book by N. Romanov was published in the USA which quickly became a bestseller. Until today this book sells not only in the United States of America, but is ordered from more than 35 countries of the world. Unfortunately, Russia is not yet on this list. But we hope that soon the Russian readers will have the possibility to get acquainted with the Russian edition of this book, which we are already preparing for publication.
