Reduced Eccentric Loading of the Knee with the Pose Running Method

In an innovative 2002 study conducted by the Exercise Science and Sports Medicine Research Unit at the Department of Human Biology of the University of Cape Town, the team led by Prof. Tim Noakes set out to compare the effects of heel-toe running popular among recreational runners, so-called midfoot running, and the conceptually developed Pose running technique on athletes.

By observing and analyzing their movements and mechanics in each running approach, the researchers made significant discoveries.

The groundbreaking findings indicated that Pose running led to virtually 50 percent less stress on the knees than heel striking or midfoot landing, and reduced overall impact on the body by way of minimized vertical bounce, compact strides and softer contact with the ground.

This research further emphasized that mitigating the natural impact of forces during running necessitates incorporating technique into the equation. It’s possible to teach and learn biomechanically sound technique. This investigation paved the way for a deeper understanding of the advantages of the Pose Method, revolutionizing running training and musculoskeletal injury prevention strategies.

An Epidemic of Running Related Musculoskeletal Injuries

Running is a widely practiced form of exercise, both in sports and as a job requirement for the military and emergency services worldwide. However, as stated in published medical, health and military research, the high prevalence of running-related injuries is a critical concern for athletes, recreational enthusiasts and military personnel alike.

The direct and indirect costs related to running-related injuries in terms of medical bills, lost or limited duty, disability compensation, associated loss of productivity and time are staggering. While there is no single source of such information for civilian population, the internal research from the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) shows that these injuries result in 10 million lost duty days and $550 million annually in medical care costs alone. It is also important to take into account an injury-related psychological distress suffered by the injured.

A running skill gap is the reason for the high injury rate. Learning running technique and developing this skill is the most direct way to prevent and reduce common running related injuries. With the increasing concern for human and financial costs of injuries, the need for skill development and education programs for athletes, military personnel, and the general population is more crucial than ever before.

It is time to recognize running-related injuries as a critical public health issue and take a proactive approach to prevent them. By raising awareness, encouraging skill development, and promoting proper form, we can help minimize the risk of injuries and allow individuals to enjoy the numerous health benefits of running without pain or long-term complications.

The Pose Method Running Skill Training course is a standardized approach to running training that is part of the updated US Army FM 7-22. It focuses on improving running skill and biomechanics in order to optimize performance, increase speed and reduce the risk of lower leg injuries. The course provides online instruction, includes practice sessions and follow-along videos.

The Pose Method Running skill training is available via ArmyIgnitED. This training supports the Department of Defense human performance programs initiative in the military.

ARMY INNOVATION | RUNNING SKILL TRAINING

Pose Tech Corporation develops practical systems for teaching, assessing, and correcting human movement at scale.

In military settings, that work includes preparing instructors to recognize running errors, apply targeted corrections, and teach a consistent running skill across large groups. Training at the U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Academy demonstrates how the system can be transferred through leaders who then carry it into the broader training environment.

ARMY INNOVATION | RUNNING SKILL TRAINING

The US Army is constantly innovating to help ensure its personnel are equipped and up to the task, both on the battlefield and off it. In 2020, one such innovation was the Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) program. It was supported by a major update to US Army’s Field Manual 7-22 for Physical Readiness Training. The new doctrine, FM 7-22 Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F), is intended to address human performance optimization and includes the Pose Method® as a method for the running skill program.

Running instruction has long been a challenging aspect of physical training within the U.S. Army. Over the last decade, this challenge has been exemplified by the prevalence of running-related injuries, particularly those affecting the lower extremities. These injuries, often categorized as overuse injuries and musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries, have emerged as the most common concern among Soldiers exiting Initial Military Training (IMT). The frequent occurrence of such injuries not only impacts the health and readiness of individual Soldiers but also has broader implications for unit readiness and the effective operational capacity of the Army as a whole.
