License Renewal Requirements for Physical Therapists + Physical Therapy Assistants
The following courses are rule approved by The Pennsylvania State Board of Physical Therapy and meet the continuing competence requirements for PTs and PTAs in accordance with the Pennsylvania Code 49 § 40.67
All PT and PTA’s must renew their Pennsylvania State License by December 31, 2024. License expires on 12/31 even-numbered years.
A licensed physical therapist shall earn 30 hours of acceptable continuing education, including at least 3 hours in ethics, 1 hour in suicide prevention, and 2 hours in child abuse recognition and reporting.
A certified physical therapist assistant shall earn 30 hours of acceptable continuing education, including at least 3 hours in ethics, 1 hour in suicide prevention, and 2 hours in child abuse recognition and reporting.
Contact hour—A unit of measure equaling 60 minutes of participation in an approved continuing education course or program.
A licensed physical therapist shall satisfy the following continuing education requirements:
(1) During each biennial renewal period, a licensee shall complete qualifying continuing education equal to at least 30 contact hours of continuing physical therapy education, including at least 2 contact hours in law or ethics applicable to the practice of physical therapy, and at least 2 contact hours in child abuse recognition and reporting in accordance with § 40.208(b) (relating to child abuse recognition and reporting—mandatory training requirement).
